Hibanobambusa tranquillans 'Shiroshima' is unmistakable with it's gorgeous, over sized and variegated leaves. This may be the tallest growing bamboo with such strongly variegated leaves; some of them appear cream colored with green stripes. The variegation is persistent year round. When the temperature and sun exposure is just right, the tips of the leaves turn pink and purple. It is thought to have originated from Japan and to be a natural hybrid. Shiroshima is an aggressive easy to grow bamboo that will grow in almost any lighting conditions, both indoors or out. When grown in a pot, large privacy barriers can be easily created. This bamboo is an unusual type that stands out.

Indocalamus tessellatus is a very tropical looking bamboo with the largest leaves of any bamboo in cultivation. The lush leaves are often used to wrap food, and can grow up to 24 inches long by 4 inches wide.  It can be grown in both sun or shade but prefers shade, and will grow in a dark spot under large trees very well. This extremely fast growing bamboo would make an excellent choice for erosion control along a river or hillside without interfering with the view. Try growing it in a tall pot to bring the unique leaves up to eye level. Indocalamus tessellatus is one of the easiest of all bamboos to grow indoors.
