    Nuda is one of the most cold hardy bamboos known and is also one of its finest. It is a nice looking bamboo with a dark node and a bright ring of white powder below accentuating the dark green to almost black new canes; add very small, dark leaves and you have an elegant bamboo. The new shoots are fine for eating and very tasty. It makes a superb choice for harsh climates when a tropical looking screen or specimen is desired. This is one of the bamboos that we recommend to people wishing to experiment with bamboo in extreme environments.

    Robert Young has banana yellow culms with the occasional vertical green stripes of various widths between the internodes. This bamboo runs very little in cool summers but in hotter summer areas such as California the banana yellow color is replaced with bright orange and it spreads vigorously. Here at Bamboo World it is one of the last bamboos to shoot each season and acts almost like a giant clumper.

Phyllostachys vivax resembles the plain green culms of Phyllostachys bambusoides except that it has thinner culm walls and there is a white powdery band beneath each node. Vivax is a good choice for eating and has nice large edible shoots.

    The culms of Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis' are yellow with several green stripes of various widths running vertically along the canes. Like plain Vivax, this variety of giant hardy timber bamboo is the fastest to reach spectacular sized groves. This bamboo is known to revert to Vivax Huangwhenzhu and Vivax as one of ours has done, so it is possible to end up with three different cultivars from this one. This is one of our favorite bamboos.

    Phyllostachys vivax 'Huangwhenzhu Inversa' is our newest form of Vivax and has yellow orange culms with a thick green stripe along the sulcis groove.  In some cases it also has green stripes of various widths runing vertically around the perimeter of the culm. The appearance of this plant is like that of a giant Phyllostachys bambusoides 'Castillon' but it grows much larger and faster.  Unlike Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis' the yellow culm has not reverted back to green or Phyllostachys vivax 'Huangwhenzhu' so far for us at Bamboo World. Like all Vivax cultivars this plant is the fastest to reach timber size and spectacular groves in our climate.

  • Semiarundinaria fastuosa 'Viridis' 11 to 15 Feet Tall

    Semiarundinaria fastuosa 'Viridis' 11 to 15 Feet Tall

    * Max Height 30' (West Coast Estimate 25' Feet)
    * Max Culm Dia 1.5"
    * Evergreen to -21C
    * Sun or Shade
    * Running Bamboo

    Semiarundinaria fastuosa 'Viridis' is one of our fastest growing bamboo plants. It has very large tropical looking leaves that measure up to 10 inches long. The branches are very densely packed with leaves that seem to grow out in tiers along canes that have persistent leaf sheaths, giving it an unusual tropical look. The canes shoot very closely together in the ground creating a solid screen with good sound protection. Add to these characteristics, very upright stature and you have a great choice for a privacy screen, or specimen planting.

    Although rated to 30 feet our Semiarundinaria fastuosa 'Viridis has only grown to about 15 feet tall here at Bamboo World.  We estimate it may grow a little shorter than rated here in the Lower Mainland and Greater Vancouver of British Columbia.

    This versatile bamboo can be grown in sun or shade, as well as indoors, or outdoors.

    Other names for this bamboo are Japanese Palm Bamboo, Narihira, and Green Temple Bamboo.
