Winterizing Plants

Many gardeners want something different in the landscape even though their area is not warm enough to grow the particular plant that they are interested in.  If you want to push the limits of your gardening zone and grow something not rated hardy enough for your area, below are a few pointers that can be incorporated to give you that extra edge to protect the most sensitive of your plants.

If you are growing your palm tree, canna, brugmansia or banana in pots you can easily grow them on indoors over the winter months.  Be sure to give them as much light as is possible inside your home and keep them a little on the dry side.  If you do not have room for them inside of your house but you have a cool garage or shed, you can easily store them inside of it over the winter.

Winterizing Banana

The largest banana trunks were wrapped with water pipe insulation that can be found at most hardware stores.  Be sure to fold the top over to make sure that no water gets inside the insulation.

The leaves of the banana plant were stripped off in the Fall and placed above the root ball and the base of each banana trunk.  You can also use any other organic materials except Walnut leaves.  Mulch as deep as possible.

Winterizing Palm Trees

Cover the soil above the Palm trees with mulch to protect the roots from hard freezes.

Wrap the center spear and the first three to six leaves with water pipe insulation.
