Chamaerops humilis var. cerifera
(Blue Mediterranean Fan Palm)
* Max height 12' - 15’ * Hardy to Zone 7 * Sun / Part Shade *
This cultivar of the
Mediterranean Fan Palm has pale blue waxy leaves and is said to be hardier than
the plain green form.
Jubaea chilensis (Chilean Wine Palm, Coquito Palm)
* Max height 80’ X 3' diameter truck * Hardy to Zone 8
- 10 * Full Sun *
This palm is thought to be
the hardiest of the Pinate Palms (Feather Leafed). It grows to a massive
size 80' feet with a large 3 foot diameter truck. It is possibly the
largest of all palms. The seeds are very large like
miniature coconuts. The largest indoor plant in the world is a Jubaea
chilensis growing in Kew, England.
Rhapidophyllum hystrix (Needle Palm)
* Max height 6' * Hardy to Zone 6 * Full to
Part Shade *
In a moist environment this
palm is thought to be the hardiest of them all. It is native to the South
East United States and produces many suckers as it matures.
Trachycarpus wagnerianus
* Max height 15' - 20' * Hardy to Zone 7 * Sun / Part Shade *
Wagnerianus is very similar
to Traychycarpus fortunei but is shorter and has stiffer fans that are said to
withstand wind better. It is still relatively new to cultivation but
expectations are that this palm will eventually replace fortunei because of it
superior growth characteristics. It is said to grow faster and be more
tolerant of cold.
Something Different
Eucalyptus gunni (Cider Gum)
* Max height 120' * Hardy to Zone 7 * Sun / Part Shade *
This hardy form of
eucalyptus is said to withstand cold down to -20C. It starts off with oval
shaped waxy blue leaves that turn to elongated green leaves once the tree
matures. If it is trimmed to stay small the juvenile oval shaped waxy blue
leaves persist. The bark is often
persistent for several feet, appearing as a thin, grey stocking, or shedding all
over to leave a smooth, yellowish, patchy surface, weathering to white-, green-
or pink-grey.
Musa Sikkimensis daj giant
* Max height 12' - 18’ * Hardy to Zone 7 * Sun *
This is a natural hybrid of
Musa Sikkimensis with mostly purple undersides of the leaves.
