Bamboo Rhizome Barrier - There are situations when a bamboo barrier is an excellent tool such as along a property line with a running bamboo. In many situations bamboo barrier is unnecessary. (How to control bamboo growth)
Secure the overlapping ends of barrier with galvanized nuts and the largest washers you can find for your bolts or use a stainless strip of steel with holes in it. Either can be found at Home Depot. Many people do not need to control the grove with barrier on all sides such as a planting along a property line when you need to direct the bamboos growth towards your property rather than your neighbors. An easy way to install a barrier over a large area is by renting a trencher from United Rentals or your nearest rental outlet; digging it by hand is an option as well but with large plantings it will be more work. Recommended Rhizome Barrier Fortunately bamboo is a shallow rooting plant that rarely grows viable rhizome buds below one foot deep. A two feet deep barrier is usually sufficient but we sell a 30 inch deep barrier to be extra conservative. The strength and thickness of the barrier is the most important factor and we strongly recommend the 60 mil HDPE (high density polyethylene) Rhizome Barrier. This barrier is installed vertically below the ground,
around the parameter of the bamboo grove at a slight angle of about 15 degrees
towards the outside of the grove, thus deflecting the rhizomes upwards to the
surface rather then down and under the barrier. Two to three inches of
barrier are left above ground level.
